Estimate of the total cost you are likely to incur
Below outlined is a rough estimate of the total cost you are likely to incur from the preparation stage to the return home. The assumption made in this scenario is a 2-week program to teach English, Math or any other volunteer-teaching option on our list of volunteering programs.
- Flight to and from Ghana: US$800-1250 (Round-trip)
- Ghana visa: US$50-150
- Vaccinations: US$100-250
- Miscellaneous personal items: US$300-900
- Personal Spending money whilst in Ghana: US$200 upwards
- VIGS-GHANA Program fee: starts at US$150
So, a rough estimate of the total cost for a two-week program duration would be about US$1,650 - 3,050. Check the equivalent in your currency.

The health-care and orphanage programs cost more because the placements are all located several hundreds of kilometers from our base in Accra. The extra cost is thus a result of higher transportation and supervision charges.

How the program fee is collected — easy installments
You may pay your program fee in easy installments after arriving in Ghana: You pay a first installment of US$70 when we get to your booked hotel in Accra (to cover the cost of picking you from the airport and your first night's air-conditioned hotel accommodation). You pay the second installment of US$50-US$100 (depending on how far away from Accra your placement is located) when we get to your assigned volunteering placement — and you like what you see. If you still like the placement after two or three days, you and us (VIGS-GHANA) can agree on how you would like to settle the remaining upkeep fee — so long as you won't be in arrears of more than a week.
Please Note: You cannot take out American Dollars or Euros or with your VISA debit or credit card. In fact, it is impossible to draw US$ or GB£ or € or any other foreign money with your VISA card or even travelers checks. The local banks are only authorized to pay you the local Ghana Cedi equivalent of whatever you are cashing — be it in the bank or at the many VISA ATMs. As such, if you opt to pay in installments when you arrive, and you didn't bring enough US$ or GB£ or € in cash, your fee will be converted into the Ghana Cedi equivalent — at the rate being used by any of the local banks — of your choosing.
You can choose to pay your program fee in advance - by a secure online method or by bank wire. If you choose to pay the fee in advance, please note that we also accept the equivalent in Euros or Pounds Sterling as quoted by x-rates.com
